In this talk presented in conjunction with our Van Gogh Alive exhibition, Jeannie Perales of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens decodes Van Gogh’s use of Floriography, the Victorian language of flowers. In the 19th century, flowers were often used as emojis are today, to communicate feelings. From sunflowers to irises and roses to poppies, join us to unpack the many meanings and emotions behind Van Gogh’s famous use of flowers.

Jeannie Perales, Vice President for Museum Exhibitions, Learning & Engagement, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

Since 2010, Jeannie has been at Selby Gardens where she oversees educational programming, exhibitions, interpretation, and volunteers. Jeannie began her career at the Denver Art Museum under a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts. Later, she became Associate Curator of Education at the Ringling Museum overseeing the docent and youth & family programs. While at Selby Gardens, she has overseen a Gardens-wide interpretation, wayfinding and theming project including the design and implementation of interpretation and programming for The Ann Goldstein Children’s Rainforest Garden, an outdoor classroom that opened in November 2013. This re-interpretation places at the center gardens guests of all ages serving the changing face of Selby Gardens as well as that of public gardens, nationwide. She has been instrumental in the implementation of an art and horticultural blockbuster exhibition program. This exhibition program is at the heart of establishing a new operating model by positioning The Gardens as a Living Museum. Ms. Perales has been involved in the creation and execution of Selby Gardens’ five-year Strategic Plan, Master Site Plan, becoming a Smithsonian Affiliate institution and re-accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums. She is a co-author of a guidebook about Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

Along with her museum and garden experience, Jeannie holds undergraduate degrees in Communications and Cultural Anthropology and a master’s degree in Educational Psychology as well as a teaching certificate. Ms. Perales’ skill is in feeding information to the public in digestible bites through informal programs during a twenty-year career in museums working with content specialists to design programs and experiences for visitors. Ms. Perales lives in Sarasota with her first husband, Daniel Perales and their two above average children, Kique, 15 and Lucia, 14.
